Shorter Days

by | Oct 1, 2016 | Market News

The days have grown shorter and the nights longer, but we are still managing to keep busy. This is by far my favorite time of the year and we have plenty to offer in the greenhouse. Clean up is a big part of this time of the year as well. These short days and long night with the combination of the cool weather takes a toll on our long day, warm loving plants such as some of our peppers and tomatoes that we have been growing in our hoop houses.

Mums are still in full swing and come in a wide variety of colors. The sunny days that we receive this time of the year really help the mums beautiful flowers bloom and that is evident once you walk through our greenhouse! Kale, Celosia, and Pansies are also still available and we have mixed pots as well. Fall décor is essential to scare off the dreadful winter while adding some good color around your home.

Fall clean up, everyone dreads it but it is inevitable. It is also one of the single most important things you can do as a greenhouse grower. Although all of our greenhouses freeze over the winter months, bacteria, fungi’s, and virus’s can and will survive in debris leftover. It is always important to clean everything up before the coming spring. A little over 4,000 pots get dumped that we have grown throughout the summer months (mostly tomatoes) and the houses are then swept and sterilized to help prevent any disease the following spring! Remember cleanliness is key!
