Moss Basket Recipies

Time To Get Dirty!

Everyone agrees that our Annual Moss Basket Days are one of the first signs of spring. These hands-on classes allow you or your group to design and plant Moss Baskets that come in two sizes, 16 inch and 20 inch. We also offer a 3 Tier Planter.

Our knowledgeable staff is available to assist you with any questions you may have. Bring your friends and enjoy conversation and refreshments while you plant.

Once your basket is planted, our staff takes care of it until early May. Moss baskets make wonderful Mother's Day gifts.

In 2008, our planting days are March 10, 13, and 17, from 9AM to 4PM, and are by reservation only. We start taking reservations in January. Please contact us to reserve your space. We look forward to seeing you in March.

Filler plants will fill in the interior spaces of the basket. Pick several Spiller plants that will spill over and trail the sides of the basket.

Moss Basket Care Guide

Temperature

Plants will take some time to become accustomed to being out of the greenhouse environment, so be sure to watch the temperature for the first few weeks you have your moss basket outside. If the thermometer dips below 50 degrees (especially at night), you will want to provide protection for your basket.

Watering

Moss baskets generally require a good deal of water, depending on the plants used and the location of the basket. On hot, windy days, they could require 4 gallons of water!

Apply a gallon or so of water and allow it to soak into the soil for a few minutes. Then apply more water. This will allow the soil to absorb the moisture and reduce under watering due to run off. If plants are growing on the sides of the basket, thoroughly water the sides of the coco moss as well.

If you are going to be away for several days and will be unable to water your basket, it would be best to place your basket in a reservoir where it can get continuous water. We suggest a garbage can lid turned upside down. Fill the lid with water and place the basket inside the lid.

Fertilizer

Use a water soluble plant fertilizer (such as Schultz or Miracle-Gro) every 10 days according to package directions to keep your plants flowering all season long. These products can be purchased at Pahl’s.

Pruning

If your plants become leggy (long and stringy) or out of balance, do not be afraid to trim them back. Use scissors to trim just below a leaf or leaf cluster. In no time they will fill out thicker and fuller than ever.

At the end of the season, don’t forget to save your wire for next year. You will receive $5 off if you bring in your wire for planting day!
