Time to get Dirty

In our warm greenhouses, the cold March wind is no concern to us.  Outside the ground is frozen, snow covered and lifeless.  Inside our staff is bustling as they prepare thousands of bedding and specimen plants for Moss Basket Days.  Saturday March 6, Tuesday March 9, and Saturday March 13 are the days set aside for our annual Moss Basket Days.

As in the past, our staff members are here to help with the soil preparation and the selection
of plants for your moss basket.  Feel free to ask our staff for advice or assistance in the placement or planting of the plant material.

Plants of Distinction for 2010

Annual – Snow Princess™ Lobularia / Lobularia hybrid

If there’s one new plant that should be on everyone’s list, it’s Snow Princess™, a unique breakthrough in the genus for heat tolerance and extended season performance. This sterile Lobularia is extremely vigorous, and because it puts no energy into setting seed it has an incredibly long bloom time. In trials in Florida, Snow Princess™ displayed mounds of fragrant, white blooms from January through July. Snow Princess creates a great hanging basket or window box and is a perfect filler in combinations.

Perennial - T-Rex Hosta / Hosta ‘T-Rex’

New for 2010, T-Rex a giant hosta, forms absolutely huge clumps of blue-green leaves measuring 18″ long and 14″ wide.  Wonderful puckering and deep veins add interest and a focal point for any garden.
30″ Ht x 38″ W.

Ornamental Grass -
Northwind Switch Grass / Panicum virgatum
 ’Northwind

Northwind Switch Grass stands very erect growing 5-6 feet in height and has a spread of 30 inches therefore can tolerate some snow load. The foliage is deep green during the growing season before turning golden in the fall.  Hardiness Zone 4 – Hardy to -20 to -30(F). Sun.

Tree -
First Editions® Majestic Skies™ Northern Pin Oak / Quercus ellipsoidalis ‘Bailskies’

Spread: 45′
Shape: Conical in youth, maturing to broad oval
Foliage: Thick, glossy green
Fall Foliage: Red

Zone: 3-6

The Northern Pin Oak is a distinct improvement over the species with straighter branching and more evenly sized. Foliage is more substantial and darker green. Excellent red fall color. This Oak prefers to grow in full sun with deep, well-drained soil. Discovered by Tamara Fulton of Bailey Nurseries.

Tropical -
Red Sister Cordyline / Cordyline ‘Red Sister’

Red Sister Cordyline, also widely known as the Hawaiian ti plant, is a tropical that thrives outdoors as well as indoors. Grown mostly as an ornamental, it is famous for its distinctive burgundy-pink and bronze-green foliage. Red Sister Cordyline prefers full sun to partial daily shade conditions and thrives in a rich, well-drained and slightly acidic soil with a pH between 5.6 and 6.5.

Vegetable – Fourth of July Tomato / Solanum lycopersicum

The first tomato to ripen by Independence Day!  Produces luscious 4-oz. fruits until early fall.  Full Sun (6+ hours of direct sun).

Fruit - Honeycrisp Apple / Malus ‘Honeycrisp’

Bloom Date: Mid-Season
Ripening Month: Late September
Pollination: Requires Pollinator

Exposure: Full Sun
Zone: 4-7

An exciting apple that is exceptionally crisp and juicy. Flavor is sweet but well-balanced. Excellent storage life, up to 7 months.  The Honeycrisp Apple has been rated equal to or higher in overall quality than Haralson, Honeygold or Keepsake in winter storage trials. Ripens in late September in MN and stores like a late season variety. Has become an outstanding commercial and home orchard variety because of its explosive crispness, flavor and storage life. Malus ‘Indian Summer’ is a good pollinator.

Vine - First Editions® Autumn Revolution™ Bittersweet / Celastrus scandens ‘Bailumn’ (PP19,811)

Height: 15-25′
Foliage: Glossy Green
Habit: Twining
Flower Color: Insignificant
Fruit: Orange to red
Exposure: Full Sun
Zone: 2-8

A revolutionary breakthrough in Bittersweet culture. Imagine never having to wonder if you’re buying or selling a male or female plant again? The majority of the flowers formed on Autumn Revolution are perfect, meaning that the flower itself has both male and female parts. In other words, you only need one plant to bear fruit. Perhaps because of this unique characteristic, the fruit production is absolutely extraordinary and the berry size is twice that of the species. Should most definitely be considered for commercial production. Truly an extraordinary improvement for this beloved native vine.

Evergreen -Mr. Bowling Ball® Arborvitae  / Thuja occidentalis ‘Bobazam’

Height: 2-3′
Spread: 2-3′
Exposure: Full Sun

Landscape Department

Now is the perfect time to start planning your next landscape project.

A well-designed landscape will create a striking appearance as well as increase the value of your property. Pahl’s Market employs a highly trained staff, dedicated to making your landscaping experience enjoyable. Whether you simply need some advice, a design you can install or a complete design and installation, we will create a unique plan that fits your individual needs. We specialize in the design and installation of a wide variety of plant material, decorative mulch, landscape rock, pavers, retaining walls, water features, natural stone, soils, sod, landscape lighting and more.  Don’t forget, we also offer garden design and maintenance along with custom container plantings.
Last fall, our crew started the construction of our newest garden feature at Pahls.  This is located on the corner of 160th Street and Foliage Avenue.  We have set several large, locally quarried
limestone boulders as the foundation for this new garden.  As spring approaches, our crew will finish the project by planting a mix of evergreens, shrubs, ornamental grasses, and perennials.  After the plantings, we will install landscape lighting, irrigation, and mulch.  This area will then be highlighted with seasonal plantings.  In the spring there will be bulbs and other cool tolerant annuals.  Throughout the summer there will be an assortment of annuals & tropicals.  The fall season will have mums and other cool tolerant annuals.  During the Christmas season, there will be a festive holiday theme display to complete our seasonal garden.

Notes from the Field

With the cold weather behind us, it is time to be thinking of spring.  The longer days with the sun getting higher in the sky brings new optimism to gardeners.  We warm our greenhouses in early February to start the the seeding of tomato plants and peppers for the gardens and start sowing and planting hanging baskets and patio tubs.  We start the plants early to keep them at a constant temperature of 65-72 degrees which maintains a short compact plant that enables it to flourish during the summer months.  The warmer the daytime temperature the more stretching of the plant occurs which is not conducive to having a plant that has much longevity.
At Pahls, we strive to produce a plant that will give our customers the satisfaction of great appeal with magnificent blooms that last throughout the summer months.  It all starts with our premium potting mix that we have formulated to produce a great root structure.  Secondly, the cultivars are carefully picked for specific colors and varieties year after year to meet our highest quality standards.  Thirdly, temperatures are kept at a constant 65 to 72 degrees depending on the crop.  We run our night time temperatures warmer than in the daytime which produces a much more durable and compact plant that will not become leggy or spindly for our customers.
We look forward to seeing you this spring at Pahls and remember it is never too late to get started!
