June News from the Field
The average Growing Degree Day (GDD) for this time of year is 281. The growing degree units this year is 368.5, which is significantly above the average. GDD’s are calculated each day as maximum temperature plus the minimum temperature divided by 2, minus the base temperature of 50 (I use 50 because that is the temp that sweet corn will start to germinate).
Watering and Fertilizing
Now that June has arrived and many of us have our flowers planted, it’s time to remind ourselves to keep feeding our plants. Most plants like the soil pH level to be around 6.5 (with the exception of some acid loving plants). At this soil pH level the amount of the most important nutrients such as calcium, nitrogen, iron, and sulfur, become readily available to the plant.
June Plant of the Month
There are few springtime landscape pictures to rival a snowy-trunked birch sending out its first pale green leaves. Birches are at their best seen against a dark evergreen background, not only in the summer, when their own leaves are bright green, or in fall, when the leaves turn golden yellow, but in winter when the white peeling trunks and branches stand out boldly against the evergreen foliage.
Beautiful June Days
It is time to mark your calendar for Pahl’s annual Father’s Day Tractor Show on Saturday, June 20th and Sunday, June 21st. You can enjoy a stroll with Dad through the greenhouses and check out the vintage and modern day tractors on display in our parking lot all weekend long.
