Blueberries

In this week’s share we are offering a container of delicious blueberries! Although not locally grown, we thought it would be a great opportunity to share them with you. Our wholesalers had a large supply and we didn’t want them to go to waste. We know you’ll enjoy them!
Often called a “superfood”, blueberries are an excellent source of dietary fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, manganese, iron and a number of antioxidants. Eaten fresh as a dessert fruit, combined in fruit salads, or baked in a variety of pastries, muffins, cakes and bars, they are one of the most versatile fruits around.
For best results, store your blueberries in the refrigerator and wash just before eating. Blueberries can be rather delicate, so here’s an easy way to wash them and prevent bruising. Simply place the berries in a large colander, dip in a larger bowl of cold water and swish them around. Drain, and spread them out on a towel to dry. They are also easily frozen, to enjoy year round. After following the previous washing instructions, dry thoroughly on cloth or paper towels. Spread out on cookie sheets and freeze solid. Once frozen, they can be packed in zip lock bags, sealed and stored flat in the freezer. Remember to label and date them!
