Dee’s Corner

Hello everyone and welcome to Week 2! Did you manage to use everything in last week’s share? If you still have some radishes left, I’m including a couple of recipes this week where they could be added. More on that later.

I’d like to take a little time to remind everyone to take care to pick up the CORRECT size share box, as listed on the top of each newsletter, under the heading “Share Type”. Remember the Teaser box is a square brown box (12 quart size), the Standard is a white Half Bushel box, and the Family size is a white Full Bushel box. If someone is picking up for you, please make sure they know which size to pick up. Some members have printed a copy of the reminder page for their family member, friend or neighbor to bring along, and this has been very helpful.

Another thing we’d like to make clear is that the share boxes may not all be identical every week. What does this mean? Due to weather conditions or harvest-related issues, we may not have all of the same items in each box every single week. There may be a substitution, or you may have a larger amount of one of the other items. This cannot always be foreseen at the time of publication of the newsletter. We will do our best to match what you see in the post “What to Expect in Your Share Box”, but please realize there may be some exceptions. We appreciate your understanding of this matter.

During the weeks ahead, as you look over the recipes you may find that some may not appeal to your family. I have a suggestion for that. For our new members, and as a reminder to our returning members, simply click on the images of the various items listed under “What to Expect in Your Share Box”. A new page will come up, describing that particular item in detail and providing storage suggestions and basic preparation techniques. Scroll down to the bottom and you’ll find “Related Recipes” from past newsletters. Hopefully you’ll discover an alternate recipe to enjoy.

If kohlrabi is new to you, don’t be put off by its unusual appearance. An easy introduction is to try it in the “Kohlrabi Home Fries” recipe. The Thyme Aioli listed with it is excellent, but Ranch dressing is a good standby, especially for kids. The Napa cabbage in this week’s share is perfect for slaw, and we’ve included an easy one to make, “Asian Napa Cabbage Slaw with Peanut Sauce”. Garnish it with a few peanuts on the top if you like. Add some of your radishes, thinly sliced, for color and texture. Yet another place to use those radishes is in the “Smoky Red Potatoes and Greens Tacos”. They add an extra layer of taste, crunch and color.

I really appreciate the comments some of you made on last week’s recipes. It’s always so great to hear what you thought. Enjoy the week ahead!
