It has come to the point in the season when fall tillage and preparation for the winter is at hand. As many of our fields are now harvested and lay empty, we prepare to put them to bed until we call upon them once again in the spring. Fields are usually disked to chop and bury any green matter or unharvested vegetables that remain. Almost immediately following we will bring in the ripper, which “busts” up the ground and rids the field of any compaction as well as allows frost to penetrate deep into the soil and further loosen it, making a beautiful spring seedbed possible. Much of our fall tillage is yet to come and we always try to beat the hard frosts and finish before the ground freezes! My grandfather told me a few times that “the worst fall tillage job is better than the best spring tillage job.” Here is to the next, and very important chapter, of the farm year!
