News from the Farmer

A lot of squash has been going out recently to our CSA members as well as to our wholesale customers. A question that has often come up is why some of the squash is decaying or spoiling in such a short period of time. The best and truly only explanation I have is due to the rain. Squash and other vine crops like it grow in constant contact with the soil, from start to finish. When this soil is constantly damp, as it has been most of this year, it causes welts to occur and infiltrates porous parts of the squash such as the stem area.  Though almost always unavoidable I can offer one piece of advice this year: get your squash to a dry location (such as your countertop) and try to prepare and consume it as soon as possible. For me this is not a problem because this time of year I could eat squash everyday! Not to mention, this week you will be receiving my personal favorite, spaghetti squash!

I hope this article has helped in some way to explain why some have been experiencing this issue.

Have a great share week!
