News from the Farmer

We were blessed with great weather this past weekend, making for a productive time in the field. Yes, the rain is back to start our share week, but we’re looking ahead to some sunny days, so we’ll slog through it.

This will be the last week you’ll receive sweet corn in your share box, so enjoy every last bite! Jalapenos are also making a final appearance. Jalapeno bacon poppers, anyone? You’ll find the habaneros conveniently pre-packaged for you. This is because we have them packed to ship to Wal-Mart. Those beautiful Roma tomatoes, so perfect for salsas, are another welcome item in your farm share. Some will arrive hand-picked from our fields and others are from our greenhouses.

Tomatillos may be new to some of you. We have two acres planted up for certain customers. We will be picking these for the next two weeks – all by hand, very labor intensive. Delicious in green sauces (salsa verde) and authentic Mexican cuisine, they offer an interesting alternative to the more familiar red salsas.

The Honeycrisp apples in your box are from a local CSA participant. This variety is a favorite for many of you. The recipe posted below offers a fun way to enjoy them.

Expect squash in your share boxes in the final weeks ahead. We have begun harvesting it to put into storage. Hard to believe it’s the final push!

Remember to look for the additional post in this week’s newsletter regarding our last harvest event – the Pumpkin Pick! Details and directions will be included.
