CSA Update: First Plantings

While the rain and temperatures sure seem to be against us, we have still been able to get the ball rolling in the field. The first plantings of cabbage, sweet corn, broccoli cauliflower, beans, peas and cucumbers are in. Thankfully these cool weather crops tolerate and still thrive in less than perfect conditions. Along with leeks, celery and fennel, I was also able to squeeze our first seeded crop of CSA vegetables on Friday! The old favorites such as beets, rutabaga and kohlrabi were on my list of crops to seed as well as a few new varieties this year including endive, and two hybrid cauliflower and broccoli that are specifically bred to grow as florets! Small and tender and sure to be delicious!

As breaks in the weather bring us relief, we have so much left to do. While we have a variety of crops already in the ground, we have barely scratched the surface of the total planting schedule for 2019! Peppers are our biggest planting priority this week, 40 acres worth in fact! The next crop of corn is due to be planted, another seeding of peas and green beans and cucumbers to name a few!

Planting season is always a busy time, engulfed in long hours, hot sun, dusty fields and dirty jeans. That being said it is still one of my favorite times of the year because it keeps me on my toes and the impending harvest makes it all worth it.

God bless, and here is to a wonderful 2019 CSA season, fresh from our fields to your tables!
