It appears that our weather will be taking a turn towards Fall tomorrow, and so do our share boxes with Butternut squash and SweeTango apples this week!
SweeTango apples will make your taste buds dance. This University of Minnesota bred apple is a cross between the Zestar! and the Honeycrisp. The SweeTango apple is crisp, juicy and has a sweet flavor with hints of fall spices. They are great for fresh eating, and also work well with any baking that involves cinnamon.
Although botanically speaking Butternut squash is a fruit, it is not as sweet as typical fruit and best prepared as you would vegetables. It has a sweet, nutty flavor similar to that of a sweet potato or pumpkin. There are several delicious ways to prepare this squash on it’s own, in soups, casseroles, salads, etc. Our favorite way here at Pahl’s is a recipe handed down from Grandma Pahl, The Savory Squash Pie.
We are still working on the details of the Apple Pick and hope to have more information (as well as firm dates for the pick) out to you before the end of the week. Meanwhile, enjoy the fall tastes in this weeks share!
