The growing season is nearing the end and your landscape may look a little drab and boring but don’t worry, it’s not to late to plant. The most prominent remaining color in your yard is most likely green. Some plants look like they have already gone to bed and have dropped their leaves. There are several ways to add fall interest with shrubs, trees, perennials and annuals. The fall season is perfect time to be outdoors and enjoy all of the wonderful colors and textures in person.
There are many types of plants that will bring color and life to the fall season in your yard. Colors can be in the bark as well as the foliage. Some have interesting fruits and textures. Some shrub options are: barberry, chokeberry, clethra, cotoneaster, dogwood, euonymus (burning bush), maple, ninebark, rhododendron, serviceberry, smokebush, spirea, sumac, viburnum, and witchhazel. Some tree options are: birch, crabapple, dogwood, euonymus, hawthorn, honeylocust, linden, maple, and redbud. The fall foliage colors range from burgundy, red, scarlet, mahogany, to yellow.
Perennials and annuals can also be an easy way to add fall interest to your landscape. They add an array of colors to your landscape and are easy to plant. You can change the color scheme for annuals to have different fall color themes each year. Example, this year could be the pink, the following could be red, next could be purple, and so on. You could also use many colors for one year. Some annual options are: aster, baby’s breath, bachelor’s button, canna lily, candytuft, dusty miller, garden mum, geranium, marigold, nasturtium, pansy, petunia, snapdragon, and zinnia. Some fall blooming perennial options are: aster, blanket flower, coneflower, coreopsis, daylily, false sunflower, joe pye weed, russian sage, and sedum. Remember, there are a lot of ornamental grasses that are perennial and can add some very nice textures and colors as well.
The addition of colors and textures to your landscape during the fall season will continue to make your outdoor spaces enjoyable to be in. Fall is a very special time in Minnesota and one that should be enjoyed outdoors. So, why not enjoy in your very own outdoor living area. Think about how you can add a little zip to your yard for the fall season and remember, FALL is still a great time to plant.
