Spring Landscape To Do List

by | Apr 2, 2015 | Landscaping, Market News, Caring for your Plants

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping and most importantly the snow appears to be gone.  As spring approaches, the first things you might notice are the lawns turning green and plants starting to peak through the soil. It is very important not to get in a hurry when working on your lawns, you want to make sure it’s not too wet and the soil temperatures are right for the best performance.

You can start removing any protective tree tape/guard around any trees. Cut back any Perennials to the ground that were left standing for winter interest. Remove any extra winter protective mulch you may have placed around plants so new growth can pop through. Some shrubs, like Hydrangeas and Roses, should be trimmed to remove any winter die back. Remember, do not prune a spring blooming plant until after it blooms.  For example, prune lilacs after they flower otherwise you won’t be able to enjoy any of the blooms.

Every spring it is always a good idea to have thatched your lawn. The best time to do this is early spring when the soil is dry and the soil temperatures are around 50 or 60 degrees. Remember the air temperature may be warm but the soil temperature is what you need to worry about. Fertilizing and spraying your lawn for weed control is good to do in the spring before it gets too hot. This will create a nice lush green lawn and help prevent annual weeds and crab grass.
