While warmer zones tend to have all the fun with spring blooming trees, those in colder regions can now add this beautiful bloomer to their pallet! Hardy from zones 2 through 8, Gladiator™ is an excellent ornament tree. An open-pollinated selection of ‘Royalty’, it was selected by Rick Durand, from Portage la Prairie in Manitoba, Cananda.
Each spring a profusion of bright pink flowers cover the branches, small fruits follow and are reddish-purple in color. The glossy, bronze-purple colored leaves compliment the prolific blooms and continue to show off the rest of the season. They retain their dark color and resist diseases such as fireblight better than other varieties such as Purple Prince.
At only 20′ tall by 9′ wide, this crabapple is ideal for space challenged sites, including under power lines. It can also be used as a small boulevard tree, or planted in a row to create a lovely screen that provides colorful interest throughout the season.
Pahl’s Market will carry these beautiful trees this Spring, available in #10 gallon containers for $179.99 and #25 gallon containers for $269.99.
