Politicians make up words all the time so I thought I might as well throw one in there as well. August has come and gone and I feel we didn’t even work up a sweat this year. Cool and wet has me thinking this is going to be an early fall? The old timers claim the first frost is six months away from the first thunderstorm we experienced in the spring. This past spring we had a thunderstorm mid-March which puts us having our first frost in the middle of September. That would be a bit early for me but I have experienced a frost as early as the beginning of this month so anything is possible.
Harvest has been rolling at a pretty fast clip with the summer crops coming to an end in the next couple of weeks. We try to be done with cucumbers, green beans and sweet corn by the middle of the month, but with the lack of heat units we still might be harvesting all three of them till October or the first hard frost. We started harvesting winter squash this past week (Acorn, Buttercup, Butternut, and Spaghetti), the cool nights have started to bring some flavor in them and they are ripe enough to start eating.
Harvesting of pumpkins is only a couple of weeks away, they are starting to color up in the fields with the sizing this year larger than average. Fall is my favorite time of year; it would be nice to see moderate temperatures and sunny skies until November 1st. Happy Trails!
