Things are Heating Up!

Writing the March newsletter always gets me really excited for spring.  February is kind of the month that we knock the rust off and slowly start getting into our planting season.  Come March we are in full stride and things really start to take off inside our greenhouse.  The greenhouses start filling up and you have to get creative to find places to put everything.  Space is extremely important when you are growing.  If you have plants too crowded they tend to grow into each other and might not get as symmetrical or as full as we would like them to be.

A lot has been going on in the past month, we have already stuck two rounds of our Geraniums and planted a couple thousand hanging baskets (New guinea, Geranium, Dragon Wing Begonia, Sun Patients, Tradescantia and Purslane to name a few).  Tomatoes have been seeded and have already germinated, which means we should be planting them in the next couple of weeks.  Gerbera Daisy’s have also been planted along with some spikes and ivy’s.

The month of March is a busy one.  We are usually planting every day, trying to keep up with the schedule that we have in place.  Our popular mixed baskets are planted, with the first batch being a little over a thousand baskets, ranging in variety as there are over 70 combinations that we use.  Thousands of 4.5” pots are planted during the course of March, along with other hanging baskets such as Calibrachoa and Petunias.  Now, if you have gotten this far in my article I know what you are thinking, how I can get in on this action?  Wonder no more!  We have Moss Basket Days going on March 10th, 13th, and 17th and this event is the perfect opportunity to shake off the winter blues and get your hands dirty!  If you are not familiar with our Moss Basket Days, it is an event we put on every year where you come out to Pahl’s and plant either a 16” patio tub, a 16” hanging basket, or a 20” hanging basket.  These baskets are then kept in our greenhouses and we grow them for you from March until Mother’s day.  It’s a fun event for the whole family or a girl’s day, whichever you prefer (men are allowed but we all know how hard it is to convince them to do anything fun and different)!  Follow this link to sign up for Moss Basket Days and be sure to stop in and smell flowers this March at Pahl’s.
