I have a couple of purple echinacea plants we would like to relocate. Is it too late to transplant yet??? When is the best time for transplanting?
Transplanting perennials varies by growth habit. Typically plants that bloom in spring transplant best in late summer or early fall. Summer and fall bloomers transplant best in early spring as they are just beginning to grow. Spring is the ideal time to transplant your Echinacea. Since Echinacea roots spread under the surface of the soil and require warm weather to establish new growth, it may not overwinter if planted in late summer or fall. Be sure to choose a location that has good drainage. Echinacea does not tolerate damp and soggy conditions and need full sun to thrive.
I am in zone 8a NC. My coneflower is not getting enough air circulation and sun due to tall zinnias near by. Can I move them now? It is August 8.
Coneflowers can be split or moved in the Spring or Fall. If you plan to do it this Fall wait until the blooms have faded, typically late September thru October.
