Spring is finally upon us with the days getting warmer and longer and yes the snow piles are diminishing! Hip, Hip, Hooray! Man that was a long cold winter, but we all survived thanks to all the winter activities that we do to keep us in shape (our men’s over 50 team finished a solid 4th out of four teams in our hockey league).

What is Winter Burn?

Now that snow is starting to melt, you may begin to notice the damage old man winter left behind on your evergreens. Minnesota is notorious for being tough on landscape plants. Your evergreen plants may have brown to rust colored damaged areas where the needles appear to have been burned. This problem is called winter burn.

April = Half March, Half May

April always brings a glimmer of hope to the gardener. The days are warmer, though the winds are brisk and cool. Snow melts fast under the heat of April sun. Some days will definitely feel like March and others will tease us with the joy of May ahead. April in Minnesota is the month I consider the beginning of Spring. Poetry is plentiful about this change of our seasons.

April Plant of the Month

The most intriguing new introduction for spring 2014 is Glow Girl Birch Leaf Spirea. Like its counterpart, Tor Birch Leaf Spirea it is a neat, compact, rounded plant that is easy to grow, deer resistant, and has tiny white flowers in the spring. The lemon-lime foliage holds its true colors and changing to a beautiful display of orange, red, and purple in the fall. Tor also had the magnificent fall color but in spring it has a dark grey/green leaf which resembles more to a birch leaf.

I have several duties, all of which vary from season to season. During early spring I take part in planting flowers with the staff as well as helping customers get the most out of their experience when coming to Pahls. As late spring and early summer comes around I am either in the fields or in the warehouse loading trucks with produce, along with other miscellaneous jobs throughout the year.
