Employee Name: Valerie Reynolds

Number of years of service at Pahl’s:
Next April will be my 10th spring at Pahl’s – so hard to believe!

Briefly describe your job duties at Pahl’s:
During spring and summer you will find me in the greenhouses helping customers with plant selection and doing miscellaneous plant upkeep projects. As we move towards fall and winter I move into the market and parts of some days I might be at the register and other times I might be helping decorate a new display or moving pottery. My roles are always different, usually active, and that keeps it interesting and helps me burn off that morning doughnut habit I can’t seem to drop.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?
I love helping people choose the right plants for the right place, leading to success, and hopefully enjoyment, with more future gardening for them. It is such a rewarding hobby, not only improving the look of your home’s exterior, but also providing that much needed exercise we all need, and giving meditative time for the soul! I especially like helping a customer who claims to have a brown thumb, and then having them return with a success story! I also have to add, I love the people I work with! I have worked enough places to know how important that is to job enjoyment, and we have a fabulous group of people at Pahl’s.

Tell us about your family…
I was married on my birthday 30 years ago, and as my husband never tires of telling people I got the best birthday present of her life! We have a 27 year old son who is a middle school youth pastor and also works with a college ministry in Winona. My stepson is one of the managers at a restaurant in Lake Tahoe, where he and his beautiful family live.

What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year? Why?
Though I love spring because the colors of the grass, trees and tulips are so vivid and rich after 6 months of dead lawns and bare trees, I would still have to choose July. It is finally, truly, warm every day. All the gardens are full and lush, and shorts and t-shirts are all that’s required to step outside for a barbecue during the oh-so-brief summer season.

What is your favorite indoor/outdoor activity?
I love to decorate for the seasons both inside my home and outside, gardening (of course), reading mystery novels, movies of all kinds and low-key golfing with my family and other non-judgmental golfers.

What are three things on your Bucket List?
Visit every site in Egypt, learn to paint, and fly into Canada for an extended fishing trip (my husband made me add that last one).

What do you miss most about being a kid?
No responsibilities of course!

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
It would either be learn to paint or learn to play the piano. I inherited my grandmother’s piano, so it would be nice to use it for something other than a plant holder.

What was the first thing you bought with your own money?
Candy . . . . and it continues to this day.

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?
In the words of those wise beauty queen contestants, I would bring about world peace. No, if I won the lottery, I would probably first pay off all my and my kid’s debts and then do something frivolous like a world cruise.

Which celebrity do you get mistaken for?
Al Gore. No, I guess I have my own unique face – never mistaken for any one!

What is your all time favorite movie?
I love ALL kinds of movies, so this is tough. I guess the ones I have seen the most times are Casablanca and then probably Aliens. That kind of shows how eclectic I am with movies, but I especially love sci-fi movies and movies from the 30s & 40s.

What song do you play the most often?
That changes a lot, but lately it has been a lot of Bonnie Raitt especially Not the Only One and Al Stewart Year of the Cat.

What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
Emptying out and then selling my childhood home in San Antonio, TX when my mom passed away.
