Rooted in Tradition, Growing into the Future: Unveiling our New Retail Space

by | Mar 4, 2024 | Market News

In the heart of Apple Valley, Pahl’s Market has been a cornerstone of the community for over four decades. We recently embarked on a transformative journey, constructing a new retail building, signaling not only a commitment to progress but also a dedication to providing an enhanced shopping experience for our customers.

Discussions about new retail space began around two and a half years ago, with the original timeline set in motion in April 2022. Anticipating a smooth transition by mid-2023, the goal was to be fully operational in time for the Fall and Christmas seasons.  We took occupancy in December 2023, only slightly deviating from the initial projections.

The decision to build a new structure was spurred by a need for an update after more than 42 years in the same location.  Gary, the owner, jests that the primary objective was to provide women with better restroom facilities, and the most effective solution was constructing a new building. The actual vision behind the new building emphasized the need for an enclosed, dust-free environment. This shift was intended to facilitate the expansion of product lines, addressing gaps in offerings over the past decades. The overall ambiance sought to evoke a return to agricultural roots, embracing a farm atmosphere that aligns with our business’s origins.

Condition reports were completed in May 2022 on two separate barn structures for our new retail building and both barns, dating back to 1951 and 1953 respectively, were incorporated into the design. Identified as the Hass and Stratford barns, they originated from different dairy farms just north of Stevens Point, Wisconsin. The majority of the existing structural components were in good condition and acceptable for re-use in reconstructing the barns structural skeleton as part of our new building.

While the construction largely adhered to the plan, the roof installation presented a significant hurdle. Delays ensued due to leaks and issues with sealing, requiring a replacement crew. Original material misplacement and subsequent reordering further extended the timeline. Despite these challenges, the new building now stands, complete with a steel roof that replaced the original asphalt covering.

Pahl’s Market’s new retail building is more than just a physical expansion, the long-term vision is a statement of permanence, signaling that Pahl’s Market is here to stay.  It’s a testament to our resilience, adaptability, and dedication to providing an exceptional customer experience. As a sixth-generation family farm, this step forward ensures that we continue to thrive in the agricultural landscape, laying the foundation for generations to come.

Hi, I can’t wait to check out your new place. I commuted from Hastings to my job in Shakopee for 7-1/2 years. I have always loved shopping at Pahl’s, you have great plants, pots and accessories. I retired February 1st. I look forward to stopping out and shopping at your beautiful, new facility soon! Thank you

Are the new hours temporary or permanent? You aren’t open on the weekends which seems opposite of what a store would want to do on the busiest shopping days of the week. I love Pahls and we take our kids all the time especially for the holiday things every year! I hope hours switch to evenings or weekends so people with the normal work hours can visit and enjoy your hardwork on the new building!
