Mulch Your Way Into Spring

Mulch your planting beds in the spring and enjoy its nice fresh appearance throughout the entire summer into fall.  Pahl’s has a wide variety of mulch. It’s reasonably priced and a job most homeowners can do. Mulch is also beneficial in retaining soil moisture, helps to moderate soil temperatures, and prevents weed growth in the planting bed. Mulch enhances your planting bed and makes a nice visual and aesthetic statement.

Typically, there are two types of mulch, inorganic and organic. Two examples of inorganic mulch are stone or rubber. Stone mulch has a long life and will not deteriorate over time. The stones can retain heat and remove moisture from the planting bed. Stone comes in a variety of colors and sizes. Rubber mulch comes in many colors, has a long life and fertilizer applications will pass through to the soil below. The rubber can have an odor and does not add any organic matter to the soil. A landscape fabric or poly should be used under the stone or rubber to keep the material clean and reduce weed growth.

Organic mulch may be a better choice for your planting bed and can include wood products, plant material, cocoa beans, or even shredded newspaper. Organic mulch reduces erosion, adds to the soil humus as it decomposes, and provides habitat for beneficial microorganisms. It has also been proven to increase the growth rates of trees and shrubs. Pahl’s Market carries a variety of organic mulch including hardwood mulch, western red cedar, cypress, and colored hardwood. The colored hardwood comes in red, gold, and coco-brown. Any of these organic choices will make your planting bed healthier and more visually appealing.

Make sure to prepare the planting bed properly. Before applying the mulch, remove all the weeds and loosen or fluff up any existing mulch. Another option is to apply Preen prior to installing the mulch. Preen will kill weed seeds currently in the planting bed. Once the bed is prepared, install the mulch between 2 and 4 inches thick. Soils that retain moisture require less mulch while sandy soils require more mulch. To prevent disease, keep the mulch thinner around the base of the plants.

If you follow these basic steps, you should have a beautiful landscape for your year-round enjoyment. You will be happy with the results and so will your plants. Pahl’s carries a large variety of both stone and wood mulch. It can be purchased in bags or bulk quantities. We also have a delivery service available.
