Picking the Perfect Christmas Tree

by | Nov 20, 2023 | Market News

Everyone wants the perfect Christmas tree, but there’s a lot more to it than just the ornaments. You’ll want to consider the size, freshness, and variety of tree before making your choice.

Follow these tips to find the perfect tree for your family this Holiday season!

Find the Right Size

Your kids might fall in love with the biggest tree in the lot, but that doesn’t mean it’ll fit in your home.

Keep in mind the space constraints of your home. Before picking out your tree, decide on the placement of your tree and measure the space. Keep in mind that the Christmas Tree Stand will add a little bit of height to the tree.

Make sure you choose a safe placement that’s far away from heat sources like vents, radiators, or fireplaces.

It might also be a good idea to bring a tape measure along. The Christmas trees at Pahl’s are sorted out by height, but that’s not the case everywhere!

Know the Tree Varieties

Not everyone is fussy about the type of tree they get, so long as it feels like a Christmas tree. But know that Evergreens with shorter needles, such as Fraser Firs or Balsam Firs, can be easier to decorate given their strong stems and added space between branches.

Make Sure the Tree is Healthy

Just like picking out produce, there are a few tips for finding the healthiest trees at your local market!

When shopping, gently grasp a branch in your fingers and pull carefully toward you.  If the tree is fresh, very few needles should come off in your hand.

Lift the tree slightly and shake or bounce on its stump. Not many needles should fall to the ground. However, some loss of interior needles is perfectly normal.

Trees with less loss of needles are generally going to last longer in your home.

Keeping it Fresh

Even after picking the freshest tree, you’ll need to do your part to keep it fresh.

This starts with making a fresh cut. At Pahl’s we can give you a fresh cut after picking your tree, but it would need to be put in a bucket of water within one hour. If that’s not possible, you’ll need to do the cut at home.

The fresh cut should be a straight cut across the base, about 1” up from the original cut. This is necessary for the tree to absorb water.

After properly cutting your tree and placing it in a stand with water, there’s still some more you can do. We wrote up a guide with everything you need to know about keeping your tree fresh, click here to learn more

Decorate

The hard parts are done and now you can get to everyone’s favorite step, the decorations! Whatever ornaments or traditions you decide to put on your tree, you now know you have a tree that’s perfect for your home and family.

You can start your Christmas Tree shopping at Pahl’s Market in Apple Valley! We’ll help you secure the tree to your vehicle and offer a fresh cut to the tree.  Click here to purchase your Christmas tree online.
