Bailey Nurseries does it again with a new addition to the Endless Summer Collection. The 2014 introduction of Endless Summer Bloomstruck follows on the heels of the original Endless Summer, the second Endless Summer Blushing Bride, and the third Endless Summer Twist-N-Shout.
This is a hands-on event that allows you to show your creative side. Yes, you do have one! Quite simply, you plant now, we provide tender loving care until May, then you pick up your explosion of color and take it home to dazzle your neighbors. With a little guidance and a few pointers from our knowledgeable staff, everyone becomes a gardener extraordinaire. Come and enjoy the warmth of our greenhouse, along with the sights and smells of spring as you get dirty planting with friends and family.

Let’s warm up! March brings us a variety of temperatures and a mixed bag of precipitation. We can enjoy calm warm sunny days and survive blasting cold winds with raging snow in the same month. I think that is what makes Minnesota folks so tough and adaptable. One sure reprieve from the weather is the snug cozy feeling in a heated greenhouse. The smell of potting soil and the first visions of green and even some color will fill your senses with hope for days to come. As gardeners we are a hopeful lot and Spring brings a sparkle of joy to our days.

In the winter months we catch up, clean up, and begin the process all over again. We are open Monday through Friday from 9AM to 5PM until April 1st when we kick off our spring hours. What does a gardener do during the winter in Minnesota? Well, we have a few choices. We can curl up with a good gardening magazine by a cozy fire. We can also start to look over all the seed catalogs coming in the mail this month. January is a good time to do some planning for the next gardening season. I take out my notebook and look at scribbles I made about the past years successes and failures. For sure I will use more of some annuals and maybe not so many of some others. We all must remember that each growing season is different, so maybe some things that didn’t look as we had hoped may be worth a second try.
Time to Get Dirty! Everyone agrees that our annual Moss Basket Days are a sure sign of spring. This hands-on event allows you to design and plant your very own Moss Basket in the warmth of our greenhouse. Our knowledgeable staff is available to assist you through the entire process and will plant sit your unique basket until early May.

The Fraser Fir was named for John Fraser, a Scottish botanist, who explored the southern Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina in the late 1700’s. The Fraser Fir is a pyramid-shaped tree with a straight trunk that reaches a maximum height of 80 feet and a trunk diameter of 1- 1 1/2 feet. The Fraser Fir grows naturally only in the southern Appalachians, above 4,000 feet in elevation. The cool temperatures and abundant rainfall of North Carolina’s high country help the Fraser Fir to keep its needles throughout the Christmas season.
We all look for candy canes this time of year. Traditionally they are white with red stripes and are peppermint flavored. Through the years many other flavors and colors have evolved. The first historical reference goes back to 1670, in Cologne, Germany, when a choirmaster looked for a way to keep the children quiet during the Living Creche tradition on Christmas Eve. He asked a local candy maker to make some sweet sticks. In order to justify giving the children candy, he asked to have a crook on the top of each stick to help the children remember the shepherds who paid visit to the baby Jesus.
