Employee Name:  Celia Scheel

Number of years of service at Pahl’s:  5

Briefly describe your job duties at Pahl’s:
My main focus of work is the greenhouse, specializing in perennials.  But since I work all 4 seasons I also help with produce, cashiering, spruce tip pot designs and selling Christmas trees.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Helping people design pots and offering suggestions for their perennial gardens.  I love it when customers come back with pictures showing me their successes!

Tell us about your family…
My husband, Kevin, develops online continuing education hours for drug and alcohol counselors.  We have 4 terrific and diversified children.  Matt met his wife, Zori, when she was working in Maine on a student work visa from Bulgaria.  They live in Aspen and both work at Zocolitto’s – she is a sous chef, he is house manager.  Kate lives in Lakeville, works for her dad as his administrative assistant and is the mother to our fabulous granddaughter, Regen.  Sarah is an environmental scientist working for a wind farm in Hawaii.  She is currently helping to restore native vegetation and protect endangered bat populations on several of the islands.  Our youngest son, Michael, married Kelsey on June 8.  They live in Rosemount.  He is a fund manager for RBC in downtown Minneapolis; she works for a PR firm in St. Paul.

What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year? Why?
You can’t beat spring at Pahl’s!  I love kicking off this season with Moss Basket Days.  The greenhouses are warm, they smell wonderful and the tiny flower plugs hold such promise for a beautiful summer.

What is your favorite indoor/outdoor activity?
When I’m not gardening, I love to cook and entertain.  Each month I challenge myself to try at least 3 new recipes – usually asking friends over to be my “guinea pigs”.

What is the farthest you have been away from home?
Tell us the most unique experience from that trip?  My brother and I went to southern Africa for 2 weeks.  We saw tons of animals including the “Big Five” – elephant, lion, leopard, water buffalo and rhinoceros.  During one of our safaris, our guide startled a lioness and her cubs and she leapt at the truck.  That is a day I will never forget!

What are three things on your “Bucket List” ?
Ride in a hot air balloon
Travel throughout Australia and New Zealand
Learn to sail

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
I just want to wake up one day and be able to play the piano.  I don’t want to take the time to practice; I just want to be able to do it!

What was the first thing you bought with your own money?
A single record of Maggie May by Rod Stewart.

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?
Travel the world.

What is your all time favorite movie?
Too many good ones – don’t have a favorite

What song do you play the most often?
Layla by Eric Clapton.

What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
Convincing my family to move from Texas to Minnesota!  It took our kids several winters to really believe that hats and gloves were not stupid things to actually wear.
