Wow! It’s hard to believe that it is already July. Time flies when you are having as much fun as we are. We are still in full swing around here as we just finished setting down and planting our mum pots for this coming fall. This year we did a little over 7,500 mum pots, with a variety of beautiful colors. The crew pinched them at the beginning of last week and finished planting them on Saturday, June 28. The key for mums is to get them as full as possible before they begin to flower. Mums are considered a short day plant for their photo period. This means that in order for them to bloom the sunlight required is 8 hours or less. One would think that this amount of sunlight is extremely important, however it is actually the 16 hours of darkness that is actually the more important process for the plant to start breaking down the energy gathered through photosynthesis during the day time. These long days that we receive during the summer months get the plants nice and full, and come fall time the short days and long nights help make sure that they are blooming beautifully for fall.
It’s also time to start thinking of fresh grown vegetables! We already have a number of fruits and vegetables in our market. Strawberries, Kohlrabi, Green leaf lettuce, Red leaf lettuce, rhubarb, Nappa Cabbage, and watermelon just to name a few. We always have fresh vegetables each and every day as we are harvesting constantly, and we still have a large selection of flowers, trees, shrubs, and pottery left which makes us a one stop shop for all of your needs. How far are you from the state fair I want to come visit the store when I come to the state fair in august.
Hi Mona, thanks for your question. We are located about 20 miles south of the State Fair Grounds, shouldn’t be more than a 1/2 hour drive straight down 35E to Cedar, right into Apple Valley. Hope to see you in August!
