April = Half March, Half May

April = Half March, Half May

April always brings a glimmer of hope to the gardener. The days are warmer, though the winds are brisk and cool. Snow melts fast under the heat of April sun. Some days will definitely feel like March and others will tease us with the joy of May ahead. April in Minnesota is the month I consider the beginning of Spring. Poetry is plentiful about this change of our seasons.

April Plant of the Month

April Plant of the Month

The most intriguing new introduction for spring 2014 is Glow Girl Birch Leaf Spirea. Like its counterpart, Tor Birch Leaf Spirea it is a neat, compact, rounded plant that is easy to grow, deer resistant, and has tiny white flowers in the spring. The lemon-lime foliage holds its true colors and changing to a beautiful display of orange, red, and purple in the fall. Tor also had the magnificent fall color but in spring it has a dark grey/green leaf which resembles more to a birch leaf.

One Snowflake at a Time

One Snowflake at a Time

Here in Apple Valley at Pahl’s Market we average 49.9 inches of the white stuff annually. That sounds like a lot of shoveling but it usually comes only a few inches at a time. Once in a while we get a whopper storm but that just adds to the drama of our wonderful winters. Our numbers sound pretty good when you think of Duluth, MN which averages 80.7 inches each winter. So you ask why I am writing about snow and not plants? Well, the plants really need good snow cover in our zone 4 climate.
