Pinch Me, It’s June!

Pinch Me, It’s June!

Now that June is here and it is warm and sunny you can begin the grooming and pinching of certain annuals as they take off with quick growth. One of the most wonderful plants that gets even more beautiful is the Supertunia. Supertunias are one of our favorite plants for beautiful color and a wonderful growth habit. Supertunias have the capability to create branches on their stems and they really become full when you pinch them back a bit. Just cut off the longest stems a few inches to just beyond where leaves come off of a stem.

May The Force Be With You, The Gardening Force That Is

May The Force Be With You, The Gardening Force That Is

May is a month of wonderful forces at work. In May your gardens are beginning a new transformation into the real glory of spring. New shoots appear every day and you can almost see some of them grow before your eyes. Tulips are getting ready to bloom and early spring perennials greet you again with the first blossoms of the season.

April = Half March, Half May

April = Half March, Half May

April always brings a glimmer of hope to the gardener. The days are warmer, though the winds are brisk and cool. Snow melts fast under the heat of April sun. Some days will definitely feel like March and others will tease us with the joy of May ahead. April in Minnesota is the month I consider the beginning of Spring. Poetry is plentiful about this change of our seasons.

March into Spring!

March into Spring!

March 20th is the first day of my favorite gardening season of all, Spring! As gardeners we may be more aware of all the changes coming to the world of gardening as the Earth emerges from a winter cover of white. Though some snow may fall in March, we know it will...

One Snowflake at a Time

One Snowflake at a Time

Here in Apple Valley at Pahl’s Market we average 49.9 inches of the white stuff annually. That sounds like a lot of shoveling but it usually comes only a few inches at a time. Once in a while we get a whopper storm but that just adds to the drama of our wonderful winters. Our numbers sound pretty good when you think of Duluth, MN which averages 80.7 inches each winter. So you ask why I am writing about snow and not plants? Well, the plants really need good snow cover in our zone 4 climate.

December in the Greenhouse

December in the Greenhouse

The fragrance in our greenhouses all through December will surely enhance your Christmas spirit. A beautiful mix of balsam, fraser fir, noble, grand, and pine will bring a blend of the fresh smell of evergreens. The fresh trees are all waiting to go home with the...

Remember September

Remember September

September is a lovely month to begin the big change over in our gardens and in our seasonal decorating. The nights will begin to cool and that cozy feeling comes over us all.  Though as humans we don’t hibernate, I think a lot of us begin to relax a bit and look...
