With the first appearance of apples this season, we know fall is making its arrival. I thought it would be a good idea to feature these very special apples in some of our recipes this week. The “Sweet Tango Apple and Cranberry Salsa” by Chef Ron Bohnert is excellent served with grilled chicken or fish. (Minnesota walleye, anyone?) His recipe and many others are offered on the SweeTango.com website. I found the other apple recipe in this week’s newsletter, “Apple Fritter Rings”, on that site. I researched a variety of apple fritter recipes, including some on Youtube, but I kept coming back to this one. It does include more ingredients than some others, but I felt the results were well worth it.
Many of you picked up boxes of canning tomatoes last week. With that in mind and because we have tomatoes in our share boxes this week, I thought the timing was right to offer member Chris Jolowsky’s recipe for “Pickled Farm-Stand Tomatoes with Jalapenos”. Chris, thank you for sharing this family favorite with us. It’s perfect as a side dish to accompany grilled steak or fish.
You’ll notice it’s a meat week, and Von Hanson’s has included Pressed Bacon in this week’s share. The recipe for Sauteed Green Beans with Red Cabbage and Bacon goes together in minutes and it’s a great way to use some of your bacon.
