Harvest Highlights: Week 12 CSA News & Updates

by | Sep 12, 2023 | CSA Member Updates, Dee's Corner

Week 12 brings us closer to autumn, and with it, a shift in the contents of your CSA share. While we bid adieu to some summer staples, we’re welcoming new arrivals that are sure to tantalize the taste buds. Let’s dive into what’s in store for you this week as we continue to celebrate this CSA journey!

As a friendly reminder, before departing from your pickup location, please take a moment to verify that you have the correct share size. This simple step can prevent any inadvertent mix-ups. If you’ve arranged for someone else to collect your share on your behalf, kindly remind them to check as well. Your attention to this detail ensures that everyone gets the size they signed up for. Thank you for your cooperation in making our CSA program a seamless and enjoyable experience for all.

Our share boxes are now graced with the beauty and flavor of winter squash. This week, you’ll find two incredible varieties – Delicata and Buttercup. Delicata squash boasts edible skin and a sweet, creamy flesh, perfect for roasting. Buttercup squash, on the other hand, offers a rich, nutty flavor and is incredibly versatile, pairing well with both savory and sweet dishes. Whether you stuff them, create hearty soups, or simply roast with olive oil and your favorite spices, these winter squashes are sure to add warmth and flavor to your meals.

The first of Minnesota’s locally grown apples have arrived, and this week, you’ll find the Zestar! variety in your share. Zestar! apples are crisp, sweet, and slightly tart, making them an excellent snacking apple. They also work well in pies, crisps, and salads, adding a burst of freshness to your dishes.

This week also marks the debut of leeks in your share box. These slender, green veggies, resembling oversized scallions, add a touch of elegance to your culinary creations. Known for their mild, sweet onion flavor with a subtle hint of garlic, leeks can be a game-changer in your kitchen. To prepare them, simply trim the dark green tops and root ends, then slice the white and light green parts. Cleaning leeks is crucial as dirt and sand can hide between the layers. Cut them lengthwise and rinse thoroughly. Try them in soups, quiches, stir-fries, or roasted for a delightful side dish.

As Week 12 unfolds, we invite you to savor every moment and every bite. The changing seasons bring with them a tapestry of flavors and experiences, and your CSA share is a direct reflection of this natural rhythm. We appreciate your continued support, your passion for local produce, and your dedication to our CSA community. As we move forward, let’s cherish these final weeks of summer’s delights and eagerly anticipate the autumn’s offerings that lie ahead. Happy cooking!
