Hello CSA Members!
Wow, does anyone else feel like the summer is flying by? It’s hard to believe that August is coming in fast!
As we enter week four of our CSA program, I wanted to share some important reminders to help you make the most of your fresh produce. After picking up your share, it’s best to head straight home and unpack everything promptly. Ensure that you refrigerate your items right away, as leaving them in a hot car or out on the counter can affect their quality.
Keep in mind that our produce might not always look like grocery store items, but we believe it tastes even better. When handling fresh produce straight from the field, a bit more care is needed. For example, you might find sunspots on cauliflower that can be grated off, or some items might benefit from an ice bath to revive them.
We’re always here to help if you have questions or need guidance. Feel free to reply to this email with an image, and we’ll do our best to assist you!
We hope everyone enjoyed the first offering of sweet corn. It’s coming in hot and heavy now, so you will be seeing it in your shares for the foreseeable future. While it is always delicious boiled or grilled, you might be looking for different ways to enjoy this favorite summer treat. For our new members, and as a reminder to our returning members, clicking on any of the images of the items listed under “What to Expect in Your Share Box” will direct you to a post on our website where you will find a description of the item, along with storage suggestions and basic preparation techniques. At the bottom of these posts, you will find related recipes from past newsletters. You may find some additional recipes that appeal to your family! For example, the Sweet Corn and Tomato Salad recipe is a refreshing treat on these hot summer days!
Thanks for your questions about share box contents in relation to this CSA newsletter. Share boxes may not all be identical every week. Due to weather conditions or harvest-related issues, we may not have all of the same items in each box every single week. This cannot always be foreseen at the time of publication of the newsletter. We will do our best to match what you see in the “What to Expect in Your Share Box,” but please realize there may be some exceptions. We appreciate your understanding of this matter.
Thanks to all those members that reached out with recipes, suggestions, and questions this week. It is so fun to hear from our CSA members, whether it be pictures of your kids helping out in the kitchen, questions about what certain items are or what to do with them, whether an item is supposed to look a certain way, fun stories about trying new things you’ve never tried before, or your adult children becoming interested in learning how to preserve. I just love hearing from you all—thanks for being a part of our CSA family!
