Hello CSA Members, welcome to Week Six!
As a CSA member, you receive both our exclusive CSA communications and our loyalty customer emails. I’d like to clarify some emails you’ll see this week as we prepare for our annual Kernel Days event, which is open to the general public and separate from our CSA program. This in-store produce sale happens once a year, and you’re more than welcome to attend! Please note that the Harvest Event Sweet Corn for CSA members will not be available for pickup at Kernel Days. If you choose to get sweet corn at our Kernel Days event there will be a $15 charge per case.
As a CSA member, you will have the opportunity to visit the sweet corn field and pick 4 dozen ears, included in the cost of your CSA share. We’re planning the Sweet Corn Pick for Saturday, August 24th, from 8 AM to 3 PM. If you can’t make it, you can send someone in your place or order your sweet corn share for pickup here at Pahl’s after the harvest event. Additionally, all CSA members will have the option to purchase additional cases of sweet corn (48 ears) for $15 each. Stay tuned for our Harvest Event notification coming within a week, where we’ll share all the specifics about the Sweet Corn Pick.
Let’s dig into this weeks share…
Kohlrabi is making another appearance this week. Did you all enjoy them week one? Kohlrabi is excellent when roasted in the oven or grilled. It brings out the inherent sweetness of it. Remove the green leaves (if any) from the top. These can be washed and shredded into a salad or steamed with other greens. The green leaves must be used within a day or two. The actual globe part will last several days stored in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. An easy introduction is to try it is the “Kohlrabi Home Fries” recipe. The Thyme Aioli listed with it is excellent, but ranch dressing is a good standby, especially for kids.
So, what’s new in the shares this week? The pepper harvest is at its peak, and we’re introducing two new varieties: the versatile Jalapeño and the delightful Hungarian Gypsy peppers. Beets are joining the lineup for the first time, and to sweeten things up, we’ve added the mouth-watering Cantaloupe.
If you are a fan of beets, you probably already know what you are going to use them for. Our beloved Dee was not a huge fan of beets, but she tolerated them in smoothies and sometimes in salads. It wasn’t until a CSA member shared this recipe, Roasted Beet Hummus, that she became a beet convert. If you are on the fence about beets, give this a try… it is delicious and pretty!
