Harvest Highlights: Week 8 CSA News & Updates

by | Aug 15, 2023 | CSA Member Updates, Dee's Corner

Hello fellow CSA adventurers! Can you believe it? We’ve reached the midpoint of our 16-week journey together, and what a flavorful ride it has been!  We’re thrilled to welcome you back to another exciting week of our Community Supported Agriculture program. As the summer sun continues to bless us with its warmth, our fields are bursting with vibrant colors and delectable flavors. Week 8 brings a couple of new additions and cherished classics that are sure to tantalize your taste buds and inspire your culinary creativity.

Gypsy Peppers, a delightfully sweet pepper hybrid, emerged from the crossbreeding of an Italian bullhorn pepper and a bell pepper. This pepper boasts a wonderfully sweet taste without any spiciness. Gypsy peppers are perfect for frying, stuffing, or incorporating raw into salads, vegetable platters, or dips.  Think stuffed peppers, fajitas, stir-fries, or even grilled cheese with a twist – Gypsy Peppers can do it all! Plus, they’re rich in vitamins A and C, making them a nutritious addition to your plate.

Eggplant, with its glossy, deep purple skin, has long been celebrated for its ability to transform into a multitude of delectable dishes. From velvety dips like Baba Ganoush to hearty classics like Eggplant Parmesan, this versatile vegetable is a blank canvas for culinary creativity.  Eggplant’s meaty texture makes it an excellent choice for both vegetarian and meat-based dishes. It soaks up flavors like a sponge, making it a fantastic addition to stews, curries, and casseroles. For grilling enthusiasts, Eggplant’s firm flesh takes on a delightful smokiness when charred over an open flame. And let’s not forget about its nutritional benefits – low in calories and a good source of dietary fiber and antioxidants.

As we celebrate the addition of new flavors, let’s not forget the comforting embrace of our classic staples. Potatoes, with their earthy richness, offer endless possibilities for hearty stews, crispy roasted dishes, or satisfying potato salads. Onions, the foundation of many culinary masterpieces, lend their distinct aroma and flavor to a wide range of savory creations. And don’t overlook the cooling presence of cucumbers—perfect for refreshing salads, crunchy pickles, or simply enjoying as a hydrating snack on a warm day.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated in the recent Sweet Corn Pick Harvest Event. It was a joy to see so many members of our community come together to celebrate the bounty of the season. For those who were unable to join us, worry not! We will be offering pickups here at the Pahl’s later this month. Keep an eye on next week’s newsletter, where we’ll provide more information on ordering your Harvest Event share of Sweet Corn for those that could not make the field event.

Thank you for being an essential part of our CSA community, and for supporting local agriculture and sustainable practices. Your commitment makes these weeks of abundance and discovery possible.

Wishing you a week filled with delicious delights and kitchen adventures!
