Harvest Highlights: Week 10 CSA News & Updates
Welcome to Week 10 of the CSA season!
From the Field: The Farm’s Changing Colors
The first hints of the season’s shift are beginning to show around the farm. The mornings start cooler, the days end a little earlier, and the air carries that late-summer edge that reminds us fall is on the way. Some crops are slowing down, while others are just coming into their prime, and the harvest is beginning to shift along with the season.
The pepper crop is at its peak, with plants loaded down with plenty of green and golden fruit, some of which is just starting to blush. These are some of the heaviest harvest days for peppers, and crews spend long hours picking to keep up. Cucumbers are beginning to slow as the vines show wear from the season. The plants aren’t as vigorous as they were a few weeks ago, but there are still plenty of cucumbers tucked under the leaves that make their way into your shares.
In the pumpkin patch, color is starting to show. A month ago it was just a wide stretch of vines, but now the first pumpkins are turning orange and filling out. Over the next few weeks the change will accelerate, and soon there will be rows of pumpkins ready for fall harvest.
This time of year brings a mix of crops—summer vegetables still producing while fall crops are coming on strong. It’s the natural handoff between seasons, and the pace of harvest only increases from here.
What’s in the box?
This week’s share captures a great mix of peak-summer favorites and the first hints of fall flavors. Our sweet corn is shining bright, fresh from the field and ready for grilling or boiling. Napa cabbage makes its way into the box with crisp, tender leaves that are perfect for slaws, stir-fries, or wraps.
The peppers are especially vibrant now. The sturdy green peppers are as reliable as ever, ready to be stuffed, chopped into salads, or tossed on the grill. Gypsy peppers, with their thinner skins and milder taste, roast to a delicate sweetness that pairs well with nearly anything. Cucumbers are back again, offering that cool, crisp bite we crave on warm days, whether sliced fresh or quickly pickled for an easy side.
Perhaps the most exciting addition this week is the first of the apples. The First Kiss variety arrives as a true sign of the season’s shift—bright, crisp, and perfectly balanced between sweet and tart. They’re wonderful eaten straight from the box but also hint at the pies, crisps, and cider days to come as autumn draws near.
From summer abundance to autumn’s first taste, this week’s box is packed with variety for your table.
