Many of our customers have included dwarf fruit trees in their landscape plans since fruit trees do double duty as producers of food while adding beauty to the surroundings, even on small lots where every square foot is important.

Dwarf fruit trees, growing to 12 to 18 feet tall and wide, provide ample shade in the summer plus delicate traceries of color and grace in the early spring when blooms appear. Yet they require little more care than trees that are purely ornamental.

Fall Planted Bulbs for Spectacular Spring Color

Fall Planted Bulbs for Spectacular Spring Color

Hard to believe we are thinking about next Spring already. However, if you want to enjoy the simple beauty of spring flowering bulbs, now is the time to plant. Bulb planting is as simple as Dig hole, Drop bulb (right side up) and Done!

Bulbs follow a natural cycle of growth and rebirth. Planted in the fall, dormant in the winter and emerging full of life with vibrant color in the spring. Bulbs are super easy to grow and any Gardner (with or without a green thumb) can create a beautiful spring bulb garden.

It is hard to believe summer is coming to a close. Well for all of you maybe, but we have a lot of work to do before we get going with the fall crops. This tends to be the most difficult time of the year because we are still handling all of the summer crops plus now we start harvesting all winter squashes… acorn, buttercup, butternut, spaghetti, sweet dumpling, delicata and soon pumpkins, gourds, mini pumpkins, Indian corn etc.

All right, we know you may want to relax and get cozy by a warm fire as nights cool down. Gardening chores are really at a minimum in September. Some things are slowing down but others are just taking off. Watch for asters, turtlehead, and perennial mums to begin to bloom. The vine “Hops” forms its beautiful seeds that flutter in the gentle breeze. I think the biggest show of all comes from perennial grasses. From the wheat like tops of feather reed grasses to the large plumes of the huge miscanthus varieties, they are all in their glory in September.

Frequently we have customers asking our tree and shrub staff to show them a small tree that they can grow close to their house. The tree must be versatile; decorative, fragrant flowers, interesting shaped leaves, and great fall color. Ideally, they tell us, they want a Japanese Maple, which is not hardy here. We show our customers the Amur Maple, also known as the Siberian Maple, which is extremely hardy and is often planted where the Japanese Maple winter-kills.

FALL in love with your Landscape!

FALL in love with your Landscape!

The growing season is nearing the end and your landscape may look a little drab and boring but don’t worry, it’s not to late to plant. The most prominent remaining color in your yard is most likely green. Some plants look like they have already gone to bed and have dropped their leaves. There are several ways to add fall interest with shrubs, trees, perennials and annuals. The fall season is perfect time to be outdoors and enjoy all of the wonderful colors and textures in person.

Wildlife gardening suits the lazy gardener, as untidiness is often to the benefit of wildlife; long grass left over winter feeds birds and shelters insects, and unpruned shrubs provide good nesting and roosting sites. Ideally, a wildlife garden should be managed to provide balance between being decorative and offering good habitat diversity. It is important that native tree, shrub and wildflower species are predominate in wildlife-oriented gardens.

The species Lonicera is commonly known to our customers as Honeysuckle and is known to them as a hardy vine or a flowering shrub. A new variety of Honeysuckle, Lonicera caerulea var. kamtschatica, a fruiting variety, is making a name for itself after being introduced to American markets.
