September News from the Field

It is hard to believe summer is coming to a close. Well for all of you maybe, but we have a lot of work to do before we get going with the fall crops. This tends to be the most difficult time of the year because we are still handling all of the summer crops plus now we start harvesting all winter squashes… acorn, buttercup, butternut, spaghetti, sweet dumpling, delicata and soon pumpkins, gourds, mini pumpkins, Indian corn etc.

September in Your Garden

All right, we know you may want to relax and get cozy by a warm fire as nights cool down. Gardening chores are really at a minimum in September. Some things are slowing down but others are just taking off. Watch for asters, turtlehead, and perennial mums to begin to bloom. The vine “Hops” forms its beautiful seeds that flutter in the gentle breeze. I think the biggest show of all comes from perennial grasses. From the wheat like tops of feather reed grasses to the large plumes of the huge miscanthus varieties, they are all in their glory in September.

Celebrating the Harvest

With September we have the arrival of Autumn. The warm summer days yield to cooler fall temperatures. The trees start changing to vibrant colors and families settle back into a school year routine once again. We see and feel the changes all around us. Our greenhouses are filled with mums waiting to burst forth in every color imaginable. From the fields, we are treated to the squash crop reaching maturity. It is a time to celebrate the changing season.

September Plant of the Month

Frequently we have customers asking our tree and shrub staff to show them a small tree that they can grow close to their house. The tree must be versatile; decorative, fragrant flowers, interesting shaped leaves, and great fall color. Ideally, they tell us, they want a Japanese Maple, which is not hardy here. We show our customers the Amur Maple, also known as the Siberian Maple, which is extremely hardy and is often planted where the Japanese Maple winter-kills.
