Dee's Corner

Dee

Hello to all our members,
What a perfect day we had for our Sweet Corn Pick Harvest Event! The weather really cooperated, with the right temperature, no precipitation and a little breeze to keep us cool. We really enjoyed meeting so many of you, and we appreciate how far some of you traveled to attend the event. Didn’t Ian do a great job with the roasted corn? He’s become quite an expert at it, and several members asked him for tips on roasting/grilling sweet corn. Farmer Cole was a big hit as well, offering rides to and from the corn field. From the littlest ones on up to the grandparents, everyone loved riding on the wagon. We are all so grateful he took the time to do that for us. Thanks again to all of you for joining us!
In this week’s share you’ll find items that are ideal for a late summer slaw. The Kale, Fennel and Kohlrabi Slaw (posted in This Week’s Recipes) is an easy and delicious way to use these items. This is one of those versatile recipes to which you can add other minced or grated vegetables for more color. For instance, add a little green bell pepper. If you have red onion, red cabbage or fresh carrots on hand, consider adding one or more of those as well. Use your imagination!
For our members who are receiving a mushroom share, we will occasionally offer recipes that include mushrooms. The Kale, Potato and Mushroom Skillet is one of those. I tried it without the mushrooms and thought it was delicious either way. We also shared another recipe compliments of Chris from Gentleman Forager. The Personal Meatloaf with Maitake Mushroom Gravy (also in This Week’s Recipes) takes a little bit more time than some of our recipes, but it’s so worth it! With cooler nights and Labor Day just around the corner, it’s getting to be that time of year for meat loaf, soups and stews. More of that in the coming weeks!

Here’s wishing all of you a great Labor Day weekend. Hope you are able to spend time with family and friends, whether it’s up at the lake or on the back patio. And to all of our littlest members who are heading back to school, have a wonderful week ahead!
