We’ve been enjoying a stretch of beautiful warm fall days, perfect for the beginning of apple-picking season! And we’re happy to offer you one of our favorite varieties in this week’s share, Sweet Tango. You’ll find this one is crisp, sweet and extremely juicy. Developed at the University of Minnesota, it’s a cross between the ever-popular Honeycrisp and Zestar apples. Since they are such an excellent eating apple, they will most likely be devoured at my house, and I probably won’t be using them in a recipe. But there will be others to look forward to in the weeks to come, and then I’ll be able to experiment!
Savoy cabbage is making its first appearance this year. With its crinkly texture and sweeter taste than the standard green cabbage, it’s delicious in salads. The Easy Savoy Cabbage Salad offered in “This Week’s Recipes” will be a great side dish next to grilled hamburgers or brats on one of these warm nights.
Do you ever have a few random vegetables left in your crisper, but not enough of one to make a recipe out of? That has happened to me more than once, which is why I found the Veggie-Packed Chicken Fried Rice (see This Week’s Recipes) to be a perfect solution. I have a feeling this is one I will go back to often.
Finally, the Savoy Cabbage, Potato & Carrot Soup is an easy recipe to make and freeze in containers for (sorry to bring it up) those cold winter days ahead. It’s always a comforting feeling to know we have something nourishing on hand to help nurse a family member through a chest cold or flu. Just a little reminder – remember to label and date your containers, so they don’t get lost in the freezer. You probably figured out how I know!
Have a wonderful warm week ahead!
