The pace has picked up dramatically these past couple of weeks. We have dodged a couple of bullets regarding the hail and the rainfalls. Although frequent they have not been the ground pounding torrential down pours that we have experienced in the past couple of years.

Mums the Word
Wow! It’s hard to believe that it is already July. Time flies when you are having as much fun as we are. We are still in full swing around here as we just finished setting down and planting our mum pots for this coming fall. This year we did a little over 7,500 mum pots, with a variety of beautiful colors.
Add Black and Purple Raspberries to Your Garden
Many people describe the strawberry as the finest fruit, while others consider the raspberry to be as good, if not better. Nonetheless, raspberries are much less common by far, because the fruits perish so rapidly. Raspberries are among the easiest garden fruit to care for and cultivate and give the home gardener as good a return in delicious fruit as he or she can get from any other fruit plant variety.

June News from the Field
The average Growing Degree Day (GDD) for this time of year is 281. The growing degree units this year is 368.5, which is significantly above the average. GDD’s are calculated each day as maximum temperature plus the minimum temperature divided by 2, minus the base temperature of 50 (I use 50 because that is the temp that sweet corn will start to germinate).
Watering and Fertilizing
Now that June has arrived and many of us have our flowers planted, it’s time to remind ourselves to keep feeding our plants. Most plants like the soil pH level to be around 6.5 (with the exception of some acid loving plants). At this soil pH level the amount of the most important nutrients such as calcium, nitrogen, iron, and sulfur, become readily available to the plant.
